what's going on这首歌原本是灵魂乐巨星Marvin gaye70年代的代表作，一首为了唤醒世人慈悲怜悯心所作的经典名作。

2001年，U2主唱Bono为了帮助那些受爱滋病捆扰的儿童们，而发起了这次群星合唱《What's Going On》的计划。群星们原本希望能藉此歌曲激发众人正视非洲地区的爱滋病问题。911美国恐怖攻击事件后，全球艺人对抗爱滋病基金会(Artist Against Aids Worldwide )于是决定将50%的歌曲收益捐给911受难者及重建基金会，其它50%捐给全球爱滋联盟。
